What to Do After an Auto Accident

Print this checklist and keep it in your glove compartment with any phone numbers you might need in the event of an accident.

Immediately Following Accident

Notify police immediately; then:

  • Inform the officer(s) if you need medical assistance
  • Inform the officer(s) if you suspect the other driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, based on their driving or behavior
  • Record name and badge number of the officer(s)

Collect information regarding all relevant parties: drivers, passengers, witnesses, etc.

  • Full name
  • Address and phone number
  • License plate and name of person to whom vehicle is registered
  • Type of car and insurance status of driver
  • If it is possible, take photographs of the accident scene, showing road condition, signage, and visibility conditions at the time.

While it is fresh in your recall, document a full description of accident:

  • Direction of travel relative to roadway
  • Time of day and weather conditions
  • Location and extent of damage to vehicles
  • Name of any towing company involved
