Cell phone use and texting by drivers are a frequent cause of rear-end accidents and pedestrian accidents. They can lead to serious injury or a fatal car accident. Some studies have compared the dangers of texting while behind the wheel to drinking and driving.
New Oklahoma laws have recently gone into effect targeting the use of cell phones and texting while driving in an effort to prevent texting and cell phone accidents due to distraction. This was done in response to the growing number of texting and cell phone distraction accidents across the state.
Beginning November 1, 2010, use of a hand-held phone and/or texting while driving is illegal for:
* any use of cell phone while driving is banned
To help discourage conduct that leads to texting or cell phone accidents, Oklahoma law makes these violations a primary offense, meaning that law enforcement does not need another reason to cite the driver in order to enforce these bans.
